Deportation threat lifted at university

Genuine overseas students at the troubled London Metropolitan University have won a reprieve from the threat of deportation.

The High Court yesterday granted an application from the university for a judicial review of the UK Border Agency's decision to revoke its licence to teach overseas students – which had threatened up to 2,600 students at the university with deportation.

Mr Justice Irwin granted students at the university and those due to start courses this term who have bona fide credentials permission to continue with their studies – thus removing the threat.

However, he refused to suspend the order revoking the licence which will mean the university is unable to recruit any new students.
