Commuters face railchaos after fire

Thousands of rail passengers face further disruption today after a weekend of travel chaos in the wake of a fire at one of Britain's busiest stations.

Birmingham New Street station was closed for 10 hours yesterday to allow engineers to work on replacing signalling cables damaged in Saturday's fire, which fire officials say may have been caused by a cigarette thrown over a bridge wall on to a gantry carrying the cables.

Last night a West Coast Main Line spokesman said New Street would get half its normal service to and from London today, with other London trains running no nearer the city than Birmingham International.
