Eighty per cent of Britain's beaches met EU clean water standards this summer, a 1 per cent increase on 1992, the Department of the Environment announced. Standards are based on the quantity of sewage bacteria in the sea. By 1996, a coastal sewage programme is due for completion and all beaches should pass.
