Charity climber dies

The organisers of a mass climb by 4,000 volunteers which has created a world record, said yesterday that one of the climbers died from a massive heart attack.

Michael Beaton, 45, a forester from Selkirk in the Scottish borders, died while climbing a mountain in Glen Affric, northern Scotland. The volunteers set out on Saturday to climb between them all 277 "Munros" - Scottish mountains over 3,000ft - to raise funds for WaterAid, a charity which funds water projects in Africa and Asia. The director of WaterAid, Jon Lane, said those at the organisation were "deeply saddened" by Mr Beaton's death.
