THE United Auto Workers union delivered a five-day strike threat on behalf of 4,200 hourly-paid workers at General Motors' plant in Lansing, Michigan. The move came as Robert Stempel, GM chairman, told employees the company was speeding up the timetable to cut 11,000 white-collar jobs.
