Smith & Nephew, the FTSE 100 maker of artificial hips and knees, has lined up John Buchanan, a former chief financial officer of BP, as a future chairman. Mr Buchanan, left, was appointed deputy chairman yesterday and is expected to succeed Dudley Eustace on his retirement as chairman in about 18 months. S&N is Mr Buchanan's fourth blue chip non-executive directorship, since he also sits on the boards of Vodafone, AstraZeneca and BHP Billiton.
