CHINA is putting pressure on contractors building Hong Kong's new airport to finish their work by 1997, the date Britain hands the colony back to China.

However, the remarks by Lu Ping, China's top official for Hong Kong affairs, that his government would like to see the airport finished by then are a radical departure from China's previous stance of outright opposition to the project.
