Barclays backs Internet shopping

Barclays Bank is backing a new shopping mall on the Internet that promises secure financial transactions by credit card. Retailers including Argos, Toys R Us, Sainsbury and Blackwells, the academic book supplier, have joined the system, which was launched yesterday. The Internet has been hampered by fears that computer hackers can lift credit card numbers from the information superhighway. Barclays says its system, developed by the California software group Netscape, encrypts shoppers' MasterCard or Visa details.
