THE NIKKEI 225 average closed modestly higher, up 139 at 16,112, buoyed by a string of positive corporate news.
The electronics giants Fujitsu and Hitachi Information Systems both announced positive earnings forecasts, while All Nippon Airways gained on reports of restructuring plans and Meiji Milk Products rose after announcing the development of a new product.
Traders said a recovery in the Nikkei above the psychologically important 16,000 yen line should lift market sentiment.
