US STOCKS rose to set records for a second day, boosted by gains in Coca-Cola and oil stocks - among the market's laggards during the past year.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 124.60, or 1.3 per cent, to a record 9,897.44, after topping 9,900 for the first time and coming within 65 points of 10,000.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 10.84, or 0.8 per cent, to 1,297.68, briefly passing 1300. The Nasdaq index rose 6.25, or 0.3 per cent, to 2,412.25.
