US STOCKS kicked off the first trading session of 1999 with some of the sharp swings that marked 1998, with blue chips ending little changed while technology shares set more records. The Dow Jones closed up just 2.48, or 0.03 per cent, at 9,184.27.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq ended up 0.7 per cent at 2,208.05 - its seventh record close in the past 10 sessions.

The S&P 500 index, a broader market gauge, ended off 1.13 points, 0.09 per cent, at 1,228.10.
