Around the World's Markets: London

LEADING SHARES closed higher for the third straight session, cheered by the US producer price data. By the close, the FTSE 100 had gained 91.8 points or 1.5 per cent to 6,245.1, having languished down some 24 points just before the release of the US figures. The rise by the FTSE 100 came in the wake of a 138-point jump on Thursday, and again featured strong gains in the heavyweight bank, telecom and pharmaceutical sectors. Bank of Scotland and SmithKline Beecham were among the best performers.
