THE HANG Seng Index closed up 114.79 points at 10826.13 yesterday helped by the recovery in Japan and hopes that local interest rates will be cut.

Local stocks rebounded for technical reasons as the market awaited results from Cheung Kong and Hutchison.

One dealer said that the biggest factor influencing the market was the sharp rise in sentiment in Tokyo.
