WHALE OF A TIME

With images of Bergerac's exploits chasing criminals around a sleepily picturesque Jersey now a hazy memory (unless of course you've got UK Gold), the island has been out of the limelight in recent years. But this week looks set to put the tax haven back on the map with the opening of the pounds 1.2m Jersey Maritime Museum. Visitors will be able to try their hand at boat-building (in the 19th century, Jersey was the fourth- biggest builder of wooden ships in the British Isles), and then sail their craft on the wave tank. Fingers crossed that the maiden voyage is not scuppered by one of Moby's relatives (below). Alternatively, settle down inside a 12ft-whelk to listen to tales of fierce squid and ghostly sailors.

North Quay, St Helier, Jersey, opens 22 Jul
