YOU claim that the legitimacy of the European Parliament is undermined by the appalling turnout at Euro elections. I know turnout is low in Britain, but what about the last elections in Belgium (90 per cent), Luxembourg (85 per cent), Austria (67 per cent), and Germany (60 per cent)? The notion that the same must apply in mainland Europe is ignorant: currently 12 former MEPs are sitting in government cabinets.
