The first of three wines that are not quite what they seem. This may sound Spanish and it's made with Rioja's favourite grape, but it's produced in the cool Adelaide Hills of South Australia. The exceptionally well-made result is most un-Aussie-like: juicy, succulent, some enticing, forward, bright-red fruits and a touch of oak. Abandon notions of sweetish German Riesling and try this brilliant modern bottle with grilled white fish or prawns as an alternative to Sauvignon Blanc. Thrillingly dry, crisp and vibrant, with flavours of green apples and some touches of tropical fruits. £10, Marks & Spencer

Viñas del Vero Luces Red 2013

This Spanish blend of Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah is undersold by its rather garish label: the reality is a fruity, robust, food-friendly red and a great buy for summer barbecue drinking.
