Villa Manga Primitivo di Manduria 2010

From Puglia in the southern heel of Italy, where some great wines are being made, a rich and velvety red for cooler autumn evenings. Aged in oak for complexity, there are full-on flavours of chocolate, dark and dried fruits, backed up with subtle spice notes of cinnamon and cloves showing all the robustness of the Primitivo grape. One for substantial roasts or a fine fillet steak.

Yali National Reserva Viognier 2011

Wonderfully fresh but concentrated Viognier from the Vina Ventisquero winery in Chile's Maipo valley, named after an important nearby wetland. Typically floral on the nose, with lots of pear-drops and apricots on the palate, underpinned with that distinctive smoky/spicy quality typical of the grape. Drink with prawn linguine or scallops with lemon, garlic and parsley.

The Ned Sauvignon Blanc 2011

Already recommended in this column earlier this year, the Ned was recently voted Best Sauvignon Blanc under £10 in the annual Decanter Awards. Normally around £9.99, the current discount at the Co-operative makes it a very decent opportunity to enjoy its really top-class, mouth-tingling flavours of lime, peach, gooseberries and green peppers.
