From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

While some speculate that Blue Monday may just be a PR stunt, it’s widely regarded as the most “depressing day of the year”.
Whether or not you believe that the third Monday of January is particularly bleak, McDonald’s has taken advantage of the day and the week that follows by giving its customers the opportunity to get their hands on free cheeseburgers for a savoury pick-me-up.
From Monday 21 January until Friday 25 January, individuals can use the fast food chain’s app to claim their free cheeseburger.
If you don’t already have an account on the My McDonald’s App, you’ll need to sign up for one by providing your name and email address.
Then, from 10.30am on Monday to Friday, you’ll be able to add a free cheeseburger to your basket on the app underneath the “my deals” tab.
You can then pick up your order from your nearest McDonald’s chain.
While the offer is continuing throughout the week, don’t go thinking you can bag as many free cheeseburgers as you desire.
Each customer is only eligible for one free cheeseburger, so make sure you think well and hard about when you’d like to savour your free meal.
A McDonald’s cheeseburger costs 99p and contains 300 calories.
A recent study conducted by the University of Liverpool in December 2018 found that fast food meals contain fewer calories than meals at higher-end restaurants.
The researchers concluded that meals at restaurants contained an average of 1,033 calories, while meals at fast-food chains contained an average of 751 calories.
