Awards season kicks off this weekend with the Golden Globe awards taking place in Los Angeles, the first major event which will culminate in the Oscars at the end of February.

Whilst much of the buzz surrounding the event focuses on the films themselves, it's hard to ignore the red carpet and its very well dressed visitors. The red carpet arrival moment has become a global stage for designers to show off their most dazzling creations on some of the world's most high profile women.

This year will be no exception, alongside the usual well known faces, nominees include some up-and-coming stars who so far have proven to be some of the most interesting when it comes to red carpet dressing.

Chief amongst those is Alicia Vikander who has both Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations now under her belt. The Swedish actress is no stranger to big designer houses - she's the face of Louis Vuitton and has frequently worn gowns by the likes of Chanel, Dior and Valentino but also isn't afraid of a more niche name such as Proenza Schouler.

Saoirse Ronan has been on the scene since 2007 with a role in Atonement, she's hit our radar in recent months with her preference for smaller fashion houses including Brit favourite Simone Rocha.

Rooney Mara's gothic take on red carpet style has earnt her many a best-dressed accolade, something she is likely to repeat this awards season.

Well known names such as Jennifer Lawrence and Cate Blanchett are also nominated this Sunday and are expected to pull out all the stops.
