Santiago, Chile: a three-ton crane was used to lift an elephant out of the moat of her enclosure in Santiago zoo after she had been pushed there by a bull elephant called Jumbo who had been trying to mount her. Jumbo was kept at bay during the rescue with an electrified wire and "lots of carrots".

Knoxville, Tennessee: paintings by Mamie, a 36-year-old elephant are being sold at $25 apiece in the zoo shop. Her confidence has risen with the art training, though it could drop if she knew that the paintings by Ruby, an elephant in Phoenix zoo, sell for $3,000 each.

Woburn, Beds: last month, Raja, a three-year-old elephant, backed into a china shop in Woburn and managed not to break anything.
