Giovanni Leoni injured during Liverpool match against Southampton
Leoni 'honoured' to be a Liverpool player
Liverpool defender Giovanni Leoni was stretchered off with a suspected anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during his debut Carabao Cup match against Southampton at Anfield.
Manager Arne Slot expressed significant concern, fearing the worst for the 18-year-old Italian, who joined Liverpool from Parma for £26m in the summer.
Leoni is expected to undergo an MRI scan to determine the full extent of the knee problem, with Slot noting that players' emotions often indicate the severity of such injuries.
A long-term absence for Leoni would leave Liverpool with only three senior center-backs: Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez.
This potential defensive shortage follows Jarell Quansah's departure to Bayer Leverkusen and a failed deadline-day move for Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi.
