Donald Trump privately assured Arab leaders at the UN that he would not permit Israel to annex the occupied West Bank, according to reports.
This reassurance came amidst calls from several Israeli ministers for the annexation of the territory, in response to increasing global recognition of a Palestinian state.
During a closed-door meeting with eight Arab and Muslim leaders, Trump's team presented a white paper detailing a peace plan for the Middle East, which included the commitment against annexation.
The meeting, described as "successful" by Trump and "fruitful" by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, involved leaders from countries including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly stated that a Palestinian state "will not happen" and faces pressure from his coalition to annex parts of the West Bank.
