Starmer announces UK officially recognises Palestinian state
UK recognises Palestinian state marking major milestone in push for peace in Middle East
Sir Keir Starmer has officially recognised the state of Palestine, a historic step amidst Israel's ongoing offensive in Gaza.
This largely symbolic decision diverges from US foreign policy and has been condemned by Israel as 'rewarding Hamas', with Donald Trump expressing disagreement.
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy conceded the recognition would not immediately ease the humanitarian crisis or free hostages but affirmed the UK's commitment to a two-state solution.
Starmer plans to impose fresh sanctions on Hamas, demanding the release of hostages, an immediate ceasefire, and the group's exclusion from Gaza's future government.
The move, which Canada and Australia also joined, aligns with Labour's manifesto pledge and aims to appease restless backbench MPs, though families of hostages warned it complicates rescue efforts.
