UK hit with three-day thunderstorm warning and heat alert as temperatures set to soar to 30C
Travel delays likely as thunderstorms forecast
- The Met Office has issued a three-day yellow thunderstorm warning across parts of the UK, starting Thursday and lasting through Saturday, potentially causing travel disruption and power loss.
- A warning is in effect for South West England and Northern Ireland until 1pm on Thursday, with heavy rain and thunderstorms moving northwards.
- Another warning is in place for South East England from 3pm Friday to 6am Saturday, with possible road closures and community cut-offs due to flooding.
- Some western areas could see 20-40mm of rainfall in a few hours, with intense downpours and lightning on Thursday, and another band of thunderstorms moving in from the southwest on Friday.
- Met Office deputy chief meteorologist Mike Silverstone said that warm, humid air from Iberia is triggering the thunderstorms, with potential highs of 30C in places.
