Pro-Palestine protesters clash with police amid Italy-wide strike
Protesters clash in Italy as thousands rally in pro-Palestinian demonstrations
Pro-Palestinian protesters clashed with police in Milan on Monday, 23 September, during a nationwide strike.
Thousands of demonstrators reportedly smashed the entrance of the city’s main train station and threw items at officers, who responded with pepper spray.
The protests were part of a 24-hour nationwide strike called by trade unions against the killings in Gaza and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's refusal to recognise Palestine as a state.
Ms Meloni, a close ally of Israel, condemned the actions, saying they would not help Gaza but would cause suffering and damage for Italian citizens.
