‘Fading’ UK high streets set to be revitalised under new plans
High street beauty chain to close 32 shops with hundreds of job losses
The government is launching a new "Pride in Place" programme aimed at revitalising neglected high streets across the UK.
Local communities will be granted new powers to block the opening of unwanted businesses, including betting shops, vape stores, and fake barbers.
Councils will also gain the ability to transform derelict buildings and boarded-up shops through Community Right to Buy and compulsory purchase powers.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is anticipated to unveil the initiative, which is supported by "record investment" for over 330 communities.
The programme seeks to address deep-rooted deprivation and regional inequality, with funding prioritising projects that have consulted local community groups.
