Five dogs have died and 26 others have fallen severely ill in the Venice Canals area of Los Angeles County, California.
The affected dogs displayed symptoms including severe lethargy, weakness, lack of coordination, vomiting, tremors, and seizures.
Los Angeles County health officials are investigating the cause, with toxic algae in the canal water being a primary suspect, though not yet definitively confirmed.
California water officials found algal toxins in tests of the canal water, algae, and scum, but are also considering other environmental hazards or pesticides.
Residents are advised to keep their pets away from the Venice Canals, preventing them from swimming, drinking the water, or coming into contact with scum or discolored water.
