Ray Donovan star Liev Schreiber has reacted to the news that the series has been cancelled.

US channel Showtime announced that the series – which ran for seven seasons – will not be returning and Schreiber had a brief message for the show’s fans.

He wrote ”Sláinte,” which is a word his Irish-American fixer would utter at several points throughout the the show. It translates as ”cheers” in Irish.

Schreiber earned three Emmy nominations for playing the law firm mediator whose clients are either celebrities or extremely wealthy individuals.

Last month, when the series was yet to be renewed, Schreiber urged the show’s fans to “let Showtime know how you feel”.

The decision goes against what Showtime’s Co-President of Entertainment Gary Levine said at the Television Critics Association (TCA) in January.

While acknowledging the show was “nearing the end of its run”, he said that an eighth season was likely.

Touchingly, Schreiber’s brother Pablo Schreiber – also an actor – replied:Congratulations on a tremendous run! Your talent, intelligence and leadership shine brightly. On to the next!”

Showtime “thanked” Schreiber for his “dedicated work” in a statement, which read: “We are proud that the series ended amid such strong viewership and on such a powerful note.”

The news means that the series officially ended on 21 January with a cliffhanger ending, which fans are expressing their disappointment over.

Ray Donovan, which also stars Jon Voight, Paula Maclolmson and Eddie Marson, began in 2013. It was created by Ann Biderman.
