How late-night hosts reacted to Trump's Israel decision
'Donald Trump just blew up the Middle East so hard that ISIS is going to take credit for it'
TV's late-night hosts were quick to address the absolute, international mayhem left behind by Donald Trump's declaration that the US would officially recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
The move has sparked protests across the region and led to condemnation from around the globe, including France, UK, Germany, Russia, China, Saudia Arabia, Turkey, Syria, and even Pope Francis.
Stephen Colbert seasonally joked about "peace talks roasting on an open fire", with Trump signing the declaration framed by the White House's Christmas decorations. He added that, "he recognised [Jerusalem] in a speech, but I'm still pretty sure he couldn't recognise it on a map."
The host also explained that Trump's declaration was "maybe to fulfil a campaign promise he made to right-wing and pro-Israel groups and big donors, like casino magnate and man literally sweating his face off, Sheldon Adelson."
He also added that Trump may be "shoring up support amongst evangelicals who believe 'Jews must return to the biblical Land of Israel to facilitate a second coming of Christ.'"
Trevor Noah, meanwhile, said on The Daily Show that, by reversing 70 years of US foreign policy, Trump may have destroyed hopes for a peace settlement between Israel and Palestine, despite the US having always stated it would be a fair mediator in the dispute. "Donald Trump just blew up the Middle East so hard that ISIS is going to take credit for it," he joked.
Both hosts also poked fun at Trump's slurred speech during the declaration, with Noah joking that he just "Adele Dazeemed the United States" in his pronunciation of it as the "United Shursh", adding he believed Trump was wearing dentures that had begun to fall out during the speech.
