Maestro Mariss Jansons (right) wields the baton and the programme consists of Weber's Overture to his opera Oberon, Richard Strauss's imposing Nietzsche- inspired tone poem Also Sprach Zarathustra and Dvorak's sunny and exuberant Symphony No 8.

The feast day of the patron saint of music, St Cecilia, falls this Friday. In recent years, the ensemble Fiori Musicali has revived a handsome tradition by hosting a St Ceciliatide Festival in the splendid setting of Stationer's Hall. Tonight's event features soprano Alexandra Valavelsky airing a selection of cabaret songs of the 1920s from Paris, New York and Berlin.
