OBTAINING PRECISE measures from wrong-sized bottles is an old favourite of puzzle-setters. Here's a moderately infuriating example:

I have a 12-pint container full of milk which I wish to share with a companion. He, for reasons that are never explained in problems such as this, has brought along only two empty bottles which hold five pints and eight pints respectively. How do we share the milk? (Drinking it as you go along is not permitted. Each person must walk away with six pints of milk in a container.)
