Album: Menahan Street Band, Make the Road by Walking, (Dunham/Daptone)

Domestic soundtrack music. By which I mean music made at home (Menahan Street is in Brooklyn) with the scope, reach and exterior focus of a film soundtrack.
It's difficult to imagine what kind of film it is, though, which I take to be a good sign. What you get is an ensemble led by Thomas Brenneck (erstwhile Winehouse guitarist) majoring in horn melodies and slingy jazz-funking drums, operating at a decidedly "indie" level of dynamic excitement. In other words, you may enjoy it, but it won't excite you.
Pick of the album: 'Make the Road by Walking': music for fire hydrants
