Album: Marcus Bonfanti, Hard Times, (Guitar Label)

Bonfanti's parents had an excellent record collection: Zep, the Doors, Hendrix, Joplin.

On the 26-year-old's debut, he wears such influences well: bearing a young bluesman's soul over tunes that could have been written any time over the past 50 years. Less fortunately, Bonfanti too often mistakes growling for emoting and his lyrics have a tendency to sound laboured at precisely the point they should feel inspired. If there's a gap between Seasick Steve and Jack Johnson, Bonfanti is the person to plug it.

Pick of the album: The Hendrix-like blues-soul of 'Not Meant for This World'
