Although in retrospect they sound less like the future of jazz than a cute Euro-update on the Ramsey Lewis Trio (no bad thing), the tragedy of EST – emphasised by the remaining members' moving sleevenotes – is that we'll never know how they might have developed.

Pianist Esbjorn Svensson's death in a diving accident last summer brought the band's life to a close, and this compilation provides a summary of their achievements. There are two main modes: the twinkling ballad and the techno shuffle.
