Album: Dufay

Mille Bonjours – Diabolus in Musica/Guerber (Alpha)

Cleverly grouped into four sections – Songs of Sorrow and Grief, Songs in Praise of Noblemen, Love Songs and Songs of Joy and Celebration – and arranged for delicate consorts of voices, vielles, gittern and clavicytherium, Antoine Guerber's survey of Dufay's secular songs with Diabolus in Musica is as beguiling as a book of hours. Consider the seductively curling lines of "Je languis en piteux martire" and it's little wonder the myth of the medieval chastity belt enjoyed such popularity in the 19th century. Though the voices are reedy and the instruments fragile, this is a delectable recital.
