Small ensemble, retro aesthetic, old songs, Marc Ribot … T-Bone Burnett is in da house.
And the house might as well be a 1920s speakeasy for all the respect the producer has for the refinements of contemporary studio jazz. For this is the post-jug-band world inhabited by Cassandra Wilson, wherein ancient material is restitched to create new art angles. Krall's smoky contralto lacks the pungency of Wilson's, but compensates with greater mobility. Nicely done.
