You can't help but read the valedictory into 72-year- old Lloyd's new album with Jason Moran on piano, Reuben Rogers, bass, and Eric Harland, drums.
He's always been as much a Lester Young as a Coltrane disciple, dedicated to the purity of his sax sound, and there are enough airy, fluttering phrases here to float a battleship. But it's the syncretic repertoire that marks this out as a late masterpiece, with standards, Monk numbers, folk tunes, mystic reveries and a lovely version of the Beach Boys' "Caroline, No".
