Sir: The suppression of protest and dissent, as during the visit of the Chinese leadership, does not sit well with our traditional notions of free speech. Someone should politely explain to our Chinese visitors that peaceful demonstrating is allowed in this country and our visitors would be expected to respect our customs, even though they are different from their own.
