Sir: Nigerian scam artists have never gone away ("Nigerian fraud claims fresh victims", 23 August). As a journalist specialising in West Africa, I have a cherished collection of "419" faxes which have rolled off my machine in recent years. The "victims" should not be viewed as victims at all. They are guilty of conspiracy to defraud the state under Nigerian law, and are prepared to do business with networks no less ruthless than the US or Russian mafias.
