Sir: Hooray for the news that doctors are to be subjected to checks on their competency ("Skills test for all doctors", 11 February). As an airline pilot I, along with my colleagues in the profession, am required by the licensing authority to pass a proficiency check every six months. My wife, a teacher, now has her professional abilities under scrutiny and has to "make the grade" or face dismissal. It is unbelievable that doctors, who are in charge of people's lives, have got away with it for so long.
