Sir: A measure of hypocrisy may on occasion perhaps be necessary to show that one believes in high standards of behaviour, even if it is difficult sometimes to live up to them.

Even so, it rather sticks in the throat to see members of the US Senate taking a solemn oath "to do impartial justice", when this could hardly be further from the intention of many.
