Sir: Why does Tony Walton (letter, 9 September) dismiss elected monarchies as a "nonsensical suggestion"? France and the United States have been electing their powerful executive monarchs for years; they merely call them presidents. In contrast, Sweden has settled for a hereditary republic in which the head of state is designated king but has no constitutional power.
