ADD A letter to the beginning and end of each of the following, each time forming a five-letter word in a way that the added letters read downwards give two related four-letter words: (Answer tomorrow)

- RUM -

- GLO -

- PAW -

- EAR -

Friday's answer:

The professor's son was 18: the third and fourth powers of 18 are 5832 and 104976, which together utilise all 10 digits once each. (Counting the number of digits proves that the answer must be between 17 and 21, then it's a simple matter of trial and error to find the answer.)
