Other than being their first Western, this Oscar-nominated retread of a John Wayne classic is a typical Coen brothers' affair.

Jeff Bridges is the US marshal hired by Hailee Steinfeld's 14-year-old Mattie Ross to hunt down the man who killed her father. What follows is a Western, complete with shoot-outs, but it is the Coens' love of developing characters, from the leads to nefarious minor outlaws, that sets this apart.
