Trump attorney says defense team changed opening strategy

Donald Trump’s attorney during his second impeachment trial has drawn comparisons to the film My Cousin Vinny.

Soon after Bruce Castor Jr delivered the defence’s opening statement, which went on for more than an hour, the 1992 comedy began trending on Twitter.

My Cousin Vinny stars Joe Pesci as an unlikely lawyer, who gives a rambling opening statement that raises eyebrows throughout the courtroom.

At one stage, Castor said that he and his defence team had “changed what we were going to do” after seeing the presentation of the lawyers trying to convict Trump. He called it “well done”.

Castor’s statement was considered to be so bizarre that Trump supporter Alan Dershowitz told Newsmax: “I have no idea what he was doing.”

Castor drew comparisons with Vinny, although some people felt this was offensive to Pesci’s character.

“This is a My Cousin Vinny-level mismatch of opening statements so far,” one person wrote.

Another added: “My Cousin Vinny is trending because Trump's defence lawyer is displaying fictional levels of ineptitude”.

Last year, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani referenced the film during a speech in which he addressed unfounded claims of election fraud.

Marisa Tomei, who won an Oscar for her role in the film, reacted to the reference by sharing a sassy photo of her character.
