Peter O'Toole has retired from films and stage at the age of 79. The Lawrence of Arabia star said it was "time for me to chuck in the sponge" as "the heart for it has gone out of me".

The British actor was nominated eight times for an Academy Award without ever winning, but was handed an honorary Oscar in 2003.
