In what must be one of the least likely sequels in the history of Hollywood, a tiny independent studio is releasing a follow-up to the blockbuster film Titanic.

The studio, The Asylum, has confirmed that Titanic 2, which tells the story of a present-day ship built in the image of its namesake, is scheduled for release in August this year.

The original, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, grossed more than £1bn.

Titanic 2, which will go straight to DVD, charts the voyage of the liner as it traces the route of the original vessel which sank on its 1912 maiden voyage across the North Atlantic, with the loss of 1,503 passengers and crew.
