Akira live-action remake close to becoming a reality
Leonardo DiCaprio is set to produce the project for Warner Bros, with Taika Waititi currently attached to direct
A live-action remake of Akira is inching closer to becoming a reality.
The project, which is set to revisit Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1988 classic anime film, set in a post-apocalyptic 2060 Tokyo, has received an $18.5m tax credit to film in California, the California Film Commission has announced.
According to Variety, production must begin within 180 days for the tax credits to be received, with filming set to take place over the course of 71 days.
Leonardo DiCaprio is set to produce the project for Warner Bros, under his Appian Way banner, with Thor: Ragnarok‘s Taika Waititi currently attached to direct.
Akira follows Shōtarō Kaneda, the leader of a local biker gang whose childhood friend, Tetsuo Shima, acquires telekinetic powers after a motorcycle accident, all while the city faces mounting protests and resistance.
The film was based on Otomo’s own manga, although the plot is considerably different.
