The American diva June Anderson scored a triumph at London's Royal Opera House last night when she sang the role of one of history's legendary heroines in a Verdi opera never before staged at Covent Garden.
Anderson, blonde and with striking looks, sang the title role in Giovanna D'Arco (Joan of Arc) in a production which is a highlight of this summer's Royal Opera Verdi festival.
Singing superbly and investing the part with emotion and anguish she was given a rapturous tribute by the first night audience.
The director, Philip Prowse, has designed a sumptuous production full of colour and spectacular scenes.
