Edinburgh Festival Day 2 / Reviews : Sex III

Eldorado meets Anna Karenina in Emily Woof's funny and intelligent one-woman show. Her protagonist travels to Spain to work in a bar, is propositioned by a Geordie waiter, jilted on the phone by her boyfriend, becomes the fantasy of an ageing Italian vamp, and finally turns into a boy. Woof delineates her characters with skilful economy. Diverse strains of love, lust and sex are at the root of the play's numerous transformations: Woof's acrobatics and trapeze act (simulating sex with an aerial swing) convey both romance and passion. Despite losing some focus in the home stretch, the show is an exhilarating combination of artistic skills.

Assembly Rooms, 54 George Street (venue 3) 031-226 2428. 12noon. To 26 Aug; then at Bedlam Theatre, 2 Forrest Road (venue 49) 031-225 9893. 8.15pm. 31 Aug-5 Sept.
